How to quickly install a WordPress theme in 2022

What is a WordPress theme?
A theme is a collection of files that work together to dictate the general appearance and overall feel of a website. Most themes include font styling, colours, page layouts and much more.
There are around 9000 free themes and many more paid themes.
Two ways to install a WordPress theme;
- Install a WordPress theme directly in WordPress, I will show you how to install, activate, reactivate and delete a theme in WordPress
- Downloading a theme from wordpress.org/themes and uploading in to WordPress.
The theme of choice for this tutorial is Kadence and in the YouTube video I will show you how to use Kadence Starter Websites plugin to create a demo website in a matter of minutes.
How to install a WordPress theme directly in WordPress
- Log in to the wordpress admin dashboard, shown below.
- Hover over Appearance on the sidebar and then click on Themes and it will open up the Themes Page.
- When on the Themes page, click Add New and it will open up the Add New page.
How to search for a theme in WordPress
- Search for Kadence in the search bar in the top right of the screen (shown below) and hover over the box that says Kadence and click Install.
- Then choose Activate and the theme will then be live on the website.
How to reactivate a theme in WordPress
- When in the WordPress admin dashboard, hover over Appearance and then click on Themes and it will open up the Themes Page.
- Hover over any of the themes shown below (apart from the one in the top left that says active) and click Activate and that theme will then be live on your website.
How to delete a WordPress theme
- When in the WordPress admin dashboard, hover over Appearance and then click on Themes and it will open up the Themes Page.
- Click on any theme that is not currently active on your site and click Delete in the bottom right corner of the window that appears and the theme will be deleted.
How to download and install a WordPress theme
- Navigate to https://wordpress.org/themes/search/kadence/
- Hover over the Kadence theme and click Download and the theme will download ready to upload in to WordPress.
- Log in to the wordpress admin dashboard, shown below.
- Hover over Appearance and then click on Themes and it will open up the Themes Page.
- When on the Themes page, click Add New and it will open up the Add New page.
- Click Upload Theme and then click Choose File to upload the theme you had downloaded earlier.
- Then click Install Now and you will install a WordPress theme.
How to activate an uploaded theme?
After installing the theme you will be met with the below message, click Activate and the theme will be live on your website.
How to customise a theme in WordPress
- Log in to the wordpress admin dashboard.
- Hover over Appearance and then click on Themes and it will open up the Themes Page.
- Click on Customise (shown above) and it will open the WordPress Customiser where you can change all sorts aspects of the theme you have installed.
- Click on the options on side menu and have a go at changing aspects of the theme such as colour, typography, layout and even create a menu from inside the WordPress Customiser.
